Professor Gertruda Biernat passed away on 1st March, 2016 at the age of 93.
Her graduate studies were delayed by the war, but she got her M.Sc. from the University of Poznań in 1950. In 1953, she entered the newly created Laboratory of Palaeozoology (now Institute of Paleobiology) of the Polish Academy of Sciences, where she kept a position until her retirement in 1998. She initiated, organized, and participated in four Polish palaeontological expeditions to Spitsbergen in 1974, 1975, 1976, and 1979. She was a co-author of the first brachiopod Treatise and a member of the Honorary Committee of the first brachiopod congress in Brest in 1985.
Among her numerous publications spanning from 1953 to 2008, she will be mostly remembered by her detailed description of Middle Devonian brachiopods from the Holy Cross Mountains (two monographs and a long paper: Biernat, 1959, 1964, 1966) and a monograph of Ordovician inarticulates (Biernat, 1972). She is the author of brachiopod genera Devonaria Biernat, 1966, Ditreta Biernat, 1972, Semitreta Biernat, 1972, Paratreta Biernat, 1972 and of the ichnogenus Diorygma Biernat, 1961. Furthermore, and she co-authored the description of brachiopod genera Quasithambonia Bednarczyk & Biernat, 1978, Pugnaria Biernat & Racki, 1986, Poloniproductus Biernat & Lazarev, 1988 and Lingularia Biernat & Emig, 1993. In her honour, three brachiopod genera have been named: Biernatium Havlícek, 1975, Biernatella Balinski, 1977, and Biernatia Holmer, 1989.
Most of active Polish brachiopodologists are in some way Gertruda Biernat’s pupils: Andrzej Balinski and Grzegorz Racki were her Ph.D. students, Adam T. Halamski her M.Sc. student, and the Ph.D. of Maria Aleksandra Bitner was reviewed by her.

Le Professeur Gertruda Biernat, née en 1923, est décédée le 1er mars 2016 à l’âge de 93 ans à Varsovie.
La 2e Guerre Mondiale retarda ses études. Après une maîtrise obtenue en 1950 à l’Université de Poznan, Gertruda entre en 1953 au Laboratoire de Paléozoologie (aujourd’hui Institut de Paléobiologie) de l’Académie Polonaise des Sciences qui venait d’être créée ; elle y travaille jusqu’à sa retraite en 1998. Elle fut à l’origine de quatre expéditions paléontologiques polonaises au Spitzberg (1974, 1975, 1976 et 1979), qu’elle a organisées et auxquelles elle a elle-même participé. Comme auteur, elle participa au volume sur les brachiopodes du premier Treatise of Invertebrate Paleontology, en 1965, et membre du Comité d’honneur du premier Congrès International sur les Brachiopodes à Brestb (France) en 1985.
Parmi ses publications échelonnées sur une période allant de 1953 à 2008, il faut noter deux monographies et un long article sur les brachiopodes mésodévoniens des Monts Sainte-Croix (Biernat, 1959, 1964, 1966) et une monographie des Inarticulés ordoviciens polonais et estoniens (Biernat, 1972). Elle fut l’auteur des genres Devonaria Biernat, 1966, Ditreta Biernat, 1972, Semitreta Biernat, 1972, Paratreta Biernat, 1972 et de l’ichnogenre Diorygma Biernat, 1961. En collaboration avec d’autres paléontologues, elle décrivit également les genres Quasithambonia Bednarczyk & Biernat, 1978, Pugnaria Biernat & Racki, 1986, Poloniproductus Biernat & Lazarev, 1988 and Lingularia Biernat & Emig, 1993. Biernatium Havlícek, 1975, Biernatella Balinski, 1977, and Biernatia Holmer, 1989 furent nommés en son honneur.
D’une manière ou d’une autre, la majorité des brachiopodologistes polonais actuels sont ses élèves : elle dirigea les thèses doctorales d’Andrzej Balinski et de Grzegorz Racki, et la maîtrise d’Adam T. Halamski ; elle fut rapporteur de la thèse doctorale de Maria Aleksandra Bitner.
