Friends of the Algae
Newsletter
Newsletter
ISSUE NUMBER 13, SPRING 2004
February 16, 2004
One year ago we were happy to announce the renaissance of Friends of the Algae Newsletter (FotAN).
The original version of FotAN was paper-printed and shipped via snail mail. The WWW version has significantly cut these production and distribution costs. FotAN pages in HTML will be hosted by the server of the University of Kansas (thanks to Andrew Torres and colleagues).
The new FotAN covers both fossil and modern algae for the benefit of everybody (biologists, ecologists, palaeontologists, stratigraphers, sedimentologists). It was initiated to constitute an effective link between scientists working with, or just interested in, fossil algae and cyanobacteria. Primarily it records contact information, research interests and publications for the subscribers, but it can include information on meetings, conferences, books, job openings, or other events.

FOSSIL & MODERN
Completion the editing of the New Syllabus of Plant Families (to be published in 2004) which covers all family names of plants, fungi, plant procaryotes and plant-like protists from Early Cambrian to recent. A new system of classification of cyanophytes (Nostocophyta) is worked out; nomenclatural and systematic rearrangements have been made in nearly all groups of algae, recent and fossil. Several new families and orders are proposed; generic and familial homonymic names are changed. A comprehensive catalogue of all algae tribal, family, ordinal, class and phylum (including intercalated ranks such as sub- and super-) is compiled and critically revised which covers all botanical and zoological literature from the Linnean times (1753) to 2003 for the period of 250 years of botanical research. Continuation of the preparation of the first volume of "PALAEOFLORA ROSSICA" under my general direction and editorship, which covers all fossil algae, cyanophytes, and fungi described from territory of Russia and adjacent countries (i.e. Russia in the limits of 1914 including all countries of CIS, Poland, Finland, Mongolia and N China). Several new generic names in fossil cyanophytes are proposed; a nomenclatural revision is in preparation.

Fossil algae (Corallinales, Daycladales and Bryopsidales), taxonomy and palaeoenvironment.
Ongoing research project (in the 10th Five Year Plan of Government of India, W.E.F. April, 2002): Micropalaeontology of fossil algae from Late Cretaceous - Early Paleocene sequence of Cauvery Basin, South India. In this project thin sections of limestone samples collected from the Cretaceous-Tertiary sequence of Cauvery Basin have been microscopically examined for the morpho-taxonomic study of calcareous algae. Sprolithaceans, non-geniculate and geniculate corallines, and dasycladalean green algae have been recorded from the Capanian and Danian sediments of Cauvery Basin. Finalized the work on the Corallines and Halimeds from the Neogene sequence of Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Paleocene of Meghalaya (North East India). In addition, analyzed the impact of end Cretaceous mass extinction event on the diversity of benthic calcareous algae from southern India.

"Modern" taxonomic and phylogenetic studies of coralline red algae (Corallinales, Rhodophyta) from Australia and New Zealand.
1: Assessing the biodiversity of non-geniculate coralline red algae from central New Zealand.
The project includes detailed anatomical and morphological study of the coralline samples from Central New Zealand and the completion of an identification guide to the most commonly occurring species. The identification guide will include descriptions and photographs of species with an emphasis on distinguishing features to facilitate identification.
The guide (and identification keys) will provide a reliable and durable reference to be utilised in fisheries and coastal management, marine resource protection, conservation and ecological studies as well provide anatomical and morphological data important for coralline algal taxonomy.
2: Taxonomic and phylogenetic studies of non-geniculate coralline red algae from south-eastern Australia.
This project includes the first detailed monographic accounts of south-eastern Australian non-geniculate coralline red algae. In addition to the taxonomy, morphology and anatomy, limited molecular data are also included with a consideration of the phylogenetic implications.

1) RNA Localization 2) Phylogenomics of Algae & other Plants
We are funded for 3 projects. First, we are studying RNA localization in Acetabularia acetabulum by searching custom-made arrays for genes expressed at the apex of adults. We will challenge our understanding of the spatial and temporal expression of fluoresceinated mRNAs by microinjecting them back into the stalk and tracing their movements with epifuorescence video microscopy. Second, we are involved in creating BAC libraries for 16 taxa that exemplify the transition from water to land. These genomic resources can be found on the web. Finally, we are working to resolve the Green Tree of Life (GToL) by sequencing the chloroplast and mitochondrial genomes of about 50 taxa in the "left hand clade" i.e. in the algae, not the angiosperms. Our sequences will be combined with morphological analyses to resolve the GToL. We will develop software useful to other portions of the ToL to deal with phylogenomic issues of this massive dataset.

Devonian strata of the Northern Timan (Russia).- Botaniczeskij Journal,
St. Petersburg, volume 86, # 4, pp. 62-69
SUMMARY: New findings of fossil plants from the Upper Devonian strata
of the Northern Timan presumably belonging to Phaeophyta are
described. The revision of Penhallow's data (1893) on the genus
Dictyotites and morphological studies of the genus
Caudophyton Stepanov, 1967 made it possible to describe a new
combination, Caudophyton fasciolus (Penhallow, 1893) S. Snigirevsky, 2001.
The ecological aspects of C. aquatilis Stepanov, 1967 (type
species of Caudophyton) and Uchtophyton Neuburg in
Senkevitsch, 1960 are discussed.

A new bibliography for the DASYCLADALES now available
BERGER, Sigrid, Bruno GRANIER and Silvano BONOTTO
Dasycladales. Research publications from the beginning until the year 2000.
Published 2004. 2 figs. 373 p. - CD-ROM (Mac/Windows). EUR 25.00 (ISBN
3-906166-12-0)
(16 VAT extra for EUR residents).
Green algae in the order Dasycladales have existed for at least 600 million
years. Their ability to survive over such a long period of time as well as their
unique structural features, make them fascinating research subjects for both
paleontologists and biologists.
The living Dasycladales include single celled organisms reaching sizes up to 200
mm in length. They survive surgery very well. They contain only one cell nucleus
druing the vegetative phase of their life cycle. It can be as large as 0.2mm in
diameter and is always located in the rhizoid. Also, the nucleus can be manually
isolated, manipulated and re - implanted. All these features make the
Dasycladales especially well suited organisms for cell biological studies. Since
the Dasycladales cells are calcified, they may be conserved in sediments which
paleontologists can easily analyze to obtain details of their evolution.
An immense body of research on Dasycladales has been published. This CD will
serve as a key to the complete list of publications up to 2000.
Available for immediate supply.

Microbialites are organo-sedimentary structures that result from the
interaction between the activity of prokaryotic (bacteria, cyanobacteria) and/or
eukaryotic (algae, fungi) organisms, sedimentary processes and environmental
physico-chemical parameters. Microbialites form laminated structures, either
fixed ("stromatolites") or loose ("oncolites"),
non-laminated clotted structures ("thrombolites") as a function of
the nature of the involved biological communities and the environmental
physico-chemical parameters.
The purpose of this Workshop is, on one hand, to make a review of the knowledge
concerning the modern and fossil microbial communities and microbialites that
occur in various sedimentary environments (marine realm, thermal springs, lakes,
rivers, deserts, karsts, etc.) and, on the other hand, to establish a prospective
regarding the research activities to be developed in various fields concerning
the study of microbial communities and microbialites : their biological
diversity, their biogeochemical functioning, their implication in cycles of
elements, the diagenetic processes that characterize these structures and the
control exerted by environmental and climatic parameters both on ther
composition and their distribution in time and space.
The Workshop intends to be multidisciplinary, one of the objectives being to
increase exchanges and interactions between scientists working in different
fields : microbiologists, geochemists, biochemists, geologists, oceanographers,
etc.
Are you a member of the CALCALGA mailing list (Recent and fossil calcareous algae)?
To send a message to all the people currently subscribed to the list, just send mail to CALCALGA@LISTSERV.REDIRIS.ES. This is called "sending mail to the list," because you send mail to a single address and LISTSERV makes copies for all the people who have subscribed. This address (CALCALGA@LISTSERV.REDIRIS.ES) is also called the "list address."
You must never try to send any command to that address, as it would be distributed to all the people who have subscribed. All commands must be sent to the "LISTSERV address," LISTSERV@LISTSERV.REDIRIS.ES. It is very important to understand the difference between the two, but fortunately it is not complicated. The LISTSERV address is like a FAX number that connects you to a machine, whereas the list address is like a normal voice line connecting you to a person. If you make a mistake and dial the FAX number when you wanted to talk to someone on the phone, you will quickly realize that you used the wrong number and call again. No harm will have been done. If on the other hand you accidentally make your FAX call someone's voice line, the person receiving the call will be inconvenienced, especially if your FAX then re-dials every 5 minutes. The fact that most people will eventually connect the FAX machine to the voice line to allow the FAX to go through and make the calls stop does not mean that you should continue to send FAXes to the voice number. People would just get mad at you. It works pretty much the same way with mailing lists, with the difference that you are calling hundreds or thousands of people at the same time, and consequently you can expect a lot of people to get upset if you consistently send commands to the list address.
You may leave the list at any time by sending a "SIGNOFF CALCALGA" command to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.REDIRIS.ES. It is recommended that you send an e-mail to both list moderators, Bruno Granier and Juan Carlos Carlos Braga.
You can also tell LISTSERV how you want it to confirm the receipt of messages you send to the list. If you do not trust the system, send a "SET CALCALGA REPRO" command and LISTSERV will send you a copy of your own messages, so that you can see that the message was distributed and did not get damaged on the way. After a while you may find that this is getting annoying, especially if your mail program does not tell you that the message is from you when it informs you that new mail has arrived from CALCALGA. If you send a "SET CALCALGA ACK NOREPRO" command, LISTSERV will mail you a short acknowledgement instead, which will look different in your mailbox directory. With most mail programs you will know immediately that this is an acknowledgement you can read later. Finally, you can turn off acknowledgements completely with "SET CALCALGA NOACK NOREPRO". Following instructions from the list owner, your subscription options have been set to "MAIL REPRO SUBJECTHDR" rather than the usual LISTSERV defaults. For more information about subscription options, send a "QUERY CALCALGA" command to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.REDIRIS.ES.
Contributions sent to this list are automatically archived. You can get a list of the available archive files by sending an "INDEX CALCALGA" command to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.REDIRIS.ES. You can then order these files with a "GET CALCALGA LOGxxxx" command, or using LISTSERV's database search facilities. Send an "INFO DATABASE" command for more information on the latter. This list is available in digest form. If you wish to receive the digested version of the postings, just issue a SET CALCALGA DIGEST command. More information on LISTSERV commands can be found in the LISTSERV reference card, which you can retrieve by sending an "INFO REFCARD" command to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.REDIRIS.ES.
