From data of recent ecological surveys on the European biodiversity (in the EU and adjacent waters), mainly in the south of the Iberian Peninsula, the Chafarinas Islands and Canary Islands, the number of phoronid species occuring in the European waters increased to 9:
** including adjacent seas; i.e. Channel, North, Baltic...
Thus, the Iberian Peninsula and the surrounding islands represent a privileged area as regards the phoronids because from the 10 valid described phoronid species, only Phoronis ijimai has not been recorded (species presently restricted to the Pacific and NW Atlantic), while P. ovalis has been cited on the French Mediterranean coast near the Spanish border.
