Nomen nudum

Last update on December 26, 2020

Following an email message from Elena Temereva asking me about a species called Phoronis chilensis, my search led to this species, reported in two environmental impact studies (see references below).

  • A. In the list of benthic fauna of the environmental impact study of Walsh (2009, p. 406), concerning the construction of a thermal power station, Phoronis chilensis has been collected in the bay of San Nicolas (district of San Juan de Marcona, province of Nazca, Peru). This study does not include any references on the quoted authors. In addition, oddly the zoological group is named Phoronido while in Spanish the correct name is Foronídeo.

  • B. In an impact study carried out in the Bayóvar area, Sechura province, Peru (SIAR 2013, p. 764-765), Phoronis chilensis is reported among the benthic species, according to the BISA database, 2012.

  • C. In the survey on the marine biodiversity conducted in 2011 around the Lobos de Tierra island by Ramírez et al. (2015), Phoronis sp. has been listed.

  • D. Phoronis muelleri has been collected at station 3578 (7°45'S, 80°05'W) during the Cruise 34 of the R/V Akademik Kurtchatov (Emig, 1984).

  • F. In Puerto Punta Lobitos, Bay of Huarmey, Phoronis chilensis is reported in the list of benthic species of the habor annex in the environmental impact study by Klohn Crippen (1998) for Compañia Minera Antamina S.A.

In 2018, P. chilensis is listed in https://github.com/lanzen/CREST/blob/master/ambi_oct2018.tsv - a site refering to Lanzen et al. (2012).

Note: Phoronis ovalis has been recorded in Chile (see Emig, 2009). No description, nor diagnosis have been published on P. chilensis, consequently this species should be considered as a nomen nudum.
