Alexander Kowalevsky was the conservator of the Zoological Cabinet at St. Petersburg University when he defended his doctoral thesis in 1867 under the title: Anatomy and Development of Phoronis [in Russian].

   On the picture, he is with his colleague Fortuné Marion (1846-1900) in Marseille. This latter created the famous "Station Marine d'Endoume" (1889-2011) in Marseille.
