Diagnosis original diagnosis (Johnson, 1951): « Thallus long, club-shaped, circular to oval in cross section. Closely spaced horizontal rows (whorls) of branches which are shaped like a drumstick (i.e., a slender shape with a ball-like expansion at the end). Central stem club-shaped and relatively wide in proportion to the entire thallus.
