Dorsal valve with holoperipheral growth, usually conical to subconical; postlarval shell with pitted microornamentation in many fossil forms; pedicle opening variably developed, open posteriorly or closed by narrow band of periostracum or listrium; internal pedicle tube may be present; mantle canal system in both valves bifurcate in recent species, but poorly known in most fossil forms; lophophore in recent species spirolophe or schizolophe.
