Acronyms used in the oil industry
compiled and edited by Jorge S. Gomes (Dec. 2009)
[PDF 1.342 KB]

Preface:  Why publish a booklet on acronyms ? Let us imagine a possible situation: A young engineer seeks assistance from his direct supervisor on how to conduct a rock typing study. The supervisor says: "It is easy young fellow. First you get your CCA and MICP data, sort samples by PTR distribution and Pc behaviour, check for consistency, plot groups on k-PHI domain, get a best fit-line and re-group the samples by PG. Later on you can integrate SCAL, Kr, wettability, etc. for the RRT grouping. I hope the workflow is clear to you". The poor engineer is lost with so many acronyms!
The purpose of this booklet, which captures more than 1000 acronyms related to our Oil & Gas industry is, therefore, to facilitate the life of all young engineers in their day-to-day activities. I cannot claim to include all the possible acronyms as I am sure there are many more which are not referred here. In this booklet I capture, primarily, the most common ones utilized in the upstream sector, i.e., the ones related to G&G, Reservoir Engineering, Petroleum Engineering etc. As far as logging abbreviations are concerned, I avoided using all commercial names adopted by the Service Companies. I restricted the acronyms to the most common ones only. The remaining acronyms pertained to the support disciplines are here for completeness only and I apologize if I missed some of them.

PARTEX Oil & Gas - Contributing to the oil and gas industry in Abu Dhabi
[PDF 10.641 KB]

 Summary:

ADCO

Until the signature of participation agreements with host Governments in the 70s, the Partex Oil and Gas Group held 5% of the concession company. After the 60% nationalization by the Governments, the group participations were reduced proportionally to 2%, which corresponds to the present holdings.
The Group in Abu Dhabi, together with its original partners, is a shareholder of some of the largest oil and gas companies in the world.
In the onshore crude oil concession, agreements ensure that the shareholders in the concessionary companies have direct access to the oil production. Thus, the Partex Oil and Gas Group is entitled to its share of the ADCO (Murban) crude oil and sells its equity oil in the international market.

GASCO
The Partex Oil and Gas Group is also in the gas business including the LPG and Paraffinic Naphtha extraction from associated gas in Abu Dhabi.
In GASCO, the shareholders also have direct access to their shares of the production and Partex sells its equity entitlements of LPG (butane and propane) and Paraffinic Naphtha in the international market.

 Summary:

OLNG/QLNG
The Partex Oil and Gas Group is also in the gas business with LNG processing in Oman.
Oman LNG produces LNG from the two trains of its plant located near Sur and sells it mainly to Korea and Japan. The third train has just started-up and is owned by a separate company, Qalhat LNG, shared by the Government of Oman, OLNG, Union Fenosa, Mitsubishi, Osaka Gas and Itochu. Partex is therefore, indirectly, also a shareholder of QLNG.

Mukhaizna
Partex has been a partner (1%) with the Mukhaizna Production Sharing Agreement, in the Sultanate of Oman since July 2005.

PDO
Until the signature of the participation agreements with host Governments in the 70s, the Partex Oil and Gas Group held 5% of the concession companies. After the 60% nationalization by the Governments, the group participations were reduced proportionally to 2%, the present holdings.
In Oman, the Group and its original partners are shareholders of some of the largest oil and gas companies in the world.
In the onshore crude oil concessions, the agreements ensure that concessionary companies shareholders have direct access to the oil production. Thus, the Partex Oil and Gas Group is entitled to its share of the PDO (Oman Blend) crude oil and sells its equity oil in the international market.

OGWA Exhibition and Conference 2012
The 2012 Oil and Gas West Asia (OGWA) Exhibition and Conference took place in Muscat from 16th to 18th April 2012.
Partex was present with a stand in the Exhibition that was honoured by the visit of His Highness Sayyid Assad bin Tariq Al Said, Representative of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said.
His Highness had extremely kind words of appreciation "for the good services rendered by Partex to Oman".
In what concerns the Conference, one paper was presented on "Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery (MEOR)", co-authored by Laura Soares, from Partex and researchers from the Portuguese Universities of Minho and Aveiro, summarizing the results of a joint R&D project.
In addition, José Lozano chaired one session on EOR projects based on Alkaline Surfactant Polymers Flooding.

THE UNIVERSE OF THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY FROM EXPLORATION TO REFINING

Drawing on more than 60 years of the combined industry experience of its authors, this comprehensive textbook covers all major technical and non-technical aspects of the industry, from the exploration of oil and gas to their supply to the markets Introduction:

"The Universe of the Oil & Gas Industry", a book which has been sponsored and promoted by Partex Oil & Gas, was written by two members of its senior staff, Fernando Alves and Jorge Gomes.

This book combines information captured throughout their extensive and diverse careers, creating a document that reflects Partex experience in multiple domains and is valuable to the understanding of the natural resources that revolutionized the history of our time - oil and gas.

It presents a global overview of the issues of the oil and gas industry and attempts to analyse each one of them, showing how these issues impact the universe of oil and gas

It begins with the history, origins and fundamentals of this industry, guiding us through the importance of geological and engineering knowledge for the efficient exploration and production of Oil & Gas resources.

Throughout the book all the technical areas are analysed, all the way from exploration to refining, but it also addresses the many other related aspects of the oil and gas industry, such as organisations, careers, environment, contracts and markets.

The book was released in Abu Dhabi on the 28th of May, 2013 and in Muscat on the 2nd of June, 2013 before audiences of high dignitaries from different sectors and various international oil and gas companies, receiving praise from all quadrants.

This is a most significant example of Partex Oil & Gas' culture of knowledge sharing with the industry, and in particular with its long time partners in Oman and the UAE over the last 75 years.

In the words of the Society of Petroleum Engineers Regional Director (Middle East, North Africa and India) and Senior Vice President of ADCO (Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Oil Operations), Mr. Fareed Abdulla, truly a remarkable, most comprehensive, instructive and invaluable collection which represents the contribution of a career full of learning that Jorge and Fernando have acquired through years of experience in serving the industry.
